Did you know that this summer is expected to be a “Lyme disease war zone” — with ticks carrying Lyme disease rampant along most of the East coast?
A tick only has to be attached to your pet for at least 24 hours to transmit Lyme disease into their bloodstream. Symptoms of Lyme disease can include fever, pain, swelling, energy loss, loss of appetite, and painful joints. Left untreated, Lyme disease can lead to kidney failure and other complications.
And Lyme disease symptoms may take weeks to show up and can be difficult to diagnose. So early detection and prevention are key!
What can you do to protect your pet from Lyme disease?
- Use a veterinarian-recommended tick preventative on your dog
- Avoid or limit exposure to tall grassy areas or woods
- Check for ticks daily
- Watch your dog closely for changes in behavior or appetite
- Have your dog vaccinated against Lyme disease
